People often wonder why Doctors of Chiropractic recommend care for infant and children. The logic is very simple and based on sound anatomical principles. Consider this:

• The power that made the body can heal the body.
• Your brain is like a master computer that must communicate with the rest of the body without    interference if one is to remain healthy.
• Nerve signals travel from the brain, down the spinal cord, out the spinal nerves, to every    organ, tissue, and cell in the body.
• The spine, comprised of 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 five lumbar vertebrae, serves to    protect that delicate nervous system.
• The spinal bones are normally freely movable.
• When injury occurs the spinal bones and joints malfunction.
• When bones and joints malfunction, nerve irritation occurs.
• Nerve irritation interferes with the normal transmission of signals from the brain to the rest of    the body.
• We call that process a "subluxation complex".
• Subluxations can cause symptoms in infants and children that include:
Colic, ear infections, suppressed immune system, constipation, diarrhea, hyperactivity,    asthma, allergies, etc.

While more research needs to be done, subluxations in developing infants and children can cause significant problems, many believe including sudden infant death syndrome.

Subluxations can occur as a result of a traumatic birth when the head and neck are stretched; by minor trauma like sleeping on the stomach with the head turned, or sleeping in car seats with the head flopped to the side; or major trauma like falling out of a bed, out of chair or off a couch. Additionally, when babies are learning to walk they seem to fall 50 times an hour. It is completely reasonable to expect that the spine of a baby can malfunction due to repeated falls just like your spine would if you fell 50 times per day. Yes, their spines are more resilient. But subluxations often occur that are most appropriately evaluated by Doctors of Chiropractic.
